Understanding Skin Inflammation: A Deep Dive into your Skin's Defence Mechanism

Inflammation is the body's built-in defence system, a natural response to injury, irritation, or infection. When our body senses damage, it sends out signals to repair the affected area. While inflammation is essential for healing, it can also cause discomfort and visible changes in the skin when it's prolonged or excessive.

Whether triggered by internal or external factors, inflammation can lead to various skin concerns that many people experience daily.

Internally, factors like stress, poor diet, and underlying health conditions can disrupt the skin's balance, causing irritation and inflammation. Chronic stress, for example, can weaken the skin's barrier, making it more susceptible to damage. Likewise, certain foods or hormonal imbalances may trigger flare-ups, leaving your skin red, sensitive, and inflamed.

Externally, sun exposure, harsh weather, and air pollution constantly bombard our skin. UV rays break down the skin’s protective layer, leading to inflammation and premature aging, while pollution particles can clog pores, triggering irritation and breakouts. Over time, these environmental factors take their toll, contributing to more pronounced skin issues.

Common signs of skin inflammation include redness, irritation, breakouts, rosacea, and even premature aging. The tell-tale signs might start small—a bit of redness or sensitivity—but if ignored, they can develop into more persistent skin problems.

Did you know that using the wrong skincare products can also aggravate inflammation? Harsh chemicals, over-exfoliating, or even using products that don't suit your skin type can trigger an inflammatory response and worsen existing skin conditions. It’s a frustrating cycle: irritated skin calls for more attention, but improper care can fuel further inflammation.
