Student Spotlight: An interview with Chloe Heyworth

Chloe Heyworth

As part of Hair Loss Awareness Month, we’re shining a spotlight on businesses that are making significant strides in the hair loss industry. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Chloe Heyworth to discuss her journey.

Can you please introduce yourself and your business?

Hi, I'm Chloe and my business is MICRO ARTISTRY Hair Clinic. I'm based in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset.

When did you join the industry?

I'm relatively new in industry having completed my training in 2021 in Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) with FTG

Why did you decide to join the Micropigmentation industry?

I have a background in art and used to paint portraits and sell commissions for a few years alongside my daytime job. I always loved art but was never sure how to turn it into a career. I discovered Micropigmentation through my mum and after doing some research decided it was the perfect way for me to use my art but also make it into a career.

What did you do prior?

I always struggled to find what I wanted to do as a career so I ended up going into sales after school and that’s what I stayed doing for quite a few years. It never felt like the right path for me and I never felt settled in my job, luckily, I then found Micropigmentation and went on to train in SMP.

Why did you decide to train specifically in SMP?

My mum is a hairdresser so I’ve always had an interest in hair growing up in that environment. I was really drawn to the SMP results more so than the Semi Permanent Makeup results so for me, it just felt like more of a natural choice and interested me more at the time.

Can you describe your experience when you first started out?

It was all through Covid really and I hadn’t been working for a while before, I just threw myself into it. I didn’t have a premises to work from or any clients. It was quite daunting to start with but my training at Finishing Touches helped build my confidence to go out and start treating people. What I did initially was rent a room by the hour so I called up a barbers and they allowed me to rent the room above theirs. It’s been a lot of going with the flow and seeing naturally where it took me. Being flexible helped me as well.

You've developed new skills and expanded your offering over time?

Yes that's right. SMP is the main treatment I offer however I only recenlty started offering Trichology services, plus PRP treatments which are carried out by Micro Artistry's in-house Nurse, Chloe Johnson.

Outside of hair loss I also offer Diode Laser Hair Removal and Microneedling scar treatments that I learn with FTG.

What advice would you give to those new in the industry?

Getting your name out there whether that be on social media, websites, newspapers, just make people aware you are there. Go into it with confidence and with the mindset that you will find clients.

What do you put your success down to?

I’d say a big focus of mine is the customer experience and I really try to give the best experience possible to all my clients. I give them a lot of time when I do treatments, trying to make them feel as comfortable as possible. I also send lots of follow up messages and make sure they know they can message me anytime if they have any concerns or questions. Customer service has been the biggest part for me and building that trust with clients.

What are you most proud of achieving in your career so far?

Creating something that is bringing in my own income, since a young age I have wanted to have my own business and work for myself so the fact that I am doing it now full time and this is the only source of income for me makes me proud.

I was also invited as a speaker at this years BAHRS 2024 annual conference which was held at London Olympia in association with Aesthetic Medicine Live.

What’s your favourite Scalp Micropigmentation treatment to do?

It would have to be Female Hair Densification; I just love seeing the results. I think it always surprises my female clients, what can be done and the difference it can make.

How does working in this industry make you feel?

I feel thankful that I've found a career that I love, I'm thankful for all the people I get to meet and help. I've never had a job that’s made me feel this way!

If you could do a treatment on anyone famous, who would you pick?

I would have to say Prince William just because I think he would look great with SMP

What’s next for you, do you have any big plans?

Well, the introduction of Trichology servives is big for me, it will allow me to offer holistic programmes alongside my existing treatment, or maybe instead of treatment. It's about offering the right solution for each client.

I also plan to create more online content such as educational videos discussing all things hair loss and giving my help and advice. I feel I have found a real passion when it comes to hair and hair loss treatments. When it comes to creating a business, I do feel it's important to find your niche and your speciality to set you apart from the crowd. That's why I have really put a lot of my focus into hair restoration to build a strong brand and reputation.
